Frequently Asked Questions

What does this screening tool do?

It is a simple tool that will ask some questions about the person in need of legal help and their issue/problem. Based on their answers, it will identify and direct people to the appropriate legal aid organization or resource.

Who is this tool for?

While anyone can use this tool, this was primarily designed to be a tool for community-based organizations, case managers, and navigators who work with immigrants with legal needs with household incomes below 200% of the federal poverty level. The tool is meant to help them direct community members to the right place for legal assistance.

Is the tool safe to use? Can anyone else see our answers?

Yes, the tool is safe to use. Nobody can see your answers, and no information is saved or stored. We built this tool with privacy and security in mind. It does not collect any personally identifying information and does not store any information about users or their answers.

If the tool directs someone to a legal aid organization, will that organization take the case?

Not necessarily. Unfortunately Maine’s legal aid organizations have limited capacity and cannot accept all cases that come to them, even when the cases have merit and are the type of cases the organization handles. The tool should direct people to the appropriate organization based on the information entered, and then the organization will take the case if they have capacity/resources to do so.
