With a technology grant from the Legal Services Corporation, Pine Tree has created three legal aid apps for Android, iPhone, iPod and iPad:
- the National Legal Aid News app
- the National Legal Aid Finder app
- the HelpMELaw app (for Mainers)
They are available from the Google play (for Android), Apple's App Store, and online.
NATIONAL LEGAL AID NEWS
The National Legal Aid News app provides news about legal aid and related programs around the country. News is available for legal aid programs state by state, for national legal centers for low-income people, for the Legal Services Corporation or for all the news. The app will provide the fifty most recent news stories for any state or category.
"National News" gathers news about the Legal Services Corporation and several news topics of general interest. "National Legal Centers" gathers news about national organizations such as the National Consumer Law Center, the National Health Law Program and others. In each state we gather news about programs providing legal assistance to the low-income community. "All The News" selects the fifty most recent news stories from all the news feeds. We gather bad news as well as good news.
NATIONAL LEGAL AID FINDER
The National Legal Aid Finder app provides contact information and website links for legal aid programs around the country. Information is provided on a state by state basis. Initially we provide information on only staff-based programs providing direct representation to low-income clients, but watch for an upgrade to include pro bono programs, as well.
For each program in each state, where such information is available, the Legal Aid Finder app provides a phone number for requesting legal assistance, a phone number to contact the administrative office, and a link to the program website offering self-help information.
The Finder app is available from Google Play (for Android) and is available as a Web App that should function on any smartphone platform iOS, Windows Mobile, Palm, Blackberry or others. In iOS "add to Home Page."
MAINE HELPMELAW APP
The Maine HelpMELaw app provides interactive contact information and website links for the major statewide legal aid programs in Maine.
This app also features a news feed that delivers the news from all of Maine's statewide legal services programs.
Finally, find some of the most popular online self-help content for Mainers looking for easy-to-access legal information. This content includes, for example:
- "Tips Before Your Rent," from Pine Tree Legal's very popular Rights of Tenants in Maine self-help tool.
- An overview of MaineCare eligibility, "Who's Eligible and Who's Not," from Maine Equal Justice Partners.
- Legal Services for the Elderly's heavily trafficked information on preparing "Powers of Attorney."
- "Voting Rights" from the Maine Disability Rights Center.
The HelpMELaw app is available from Google play (for Android) and will soon be available as a Web App that should function on any smartphone platform: iOS, Windows Mobile, Palm, Blackberry and others. In iOS "add to Home Page."
